When John Barrett Kelly arrived in Abu Dhabi in 1957, few could imagine what to expect. The emirate found oil within a year and 10 years later Britain announced it was leaving the Gulf.

Kelly was an expert on the borders of the Arabian Peninsula and Sheikh Zayed, when he became ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966, hired him to help draw the borders of the emirate and what would become the Arab Emirates. United.

Kelly amassed a unique collection of rare images, cards and letters during her time in the area.

He photographs fishing villages, forts and the Liwa Oasis, while his private papers offer a candid and vivid perspective on the British retreat.

The photos represent the houses in which people lived and they lived the same kind of life as those of their ancestors. That time is over now

Saul Kelly

He also took several striking photographs of Sheikh Zayed, including one of him holding a desert majlis. He sits on a carpet, coffee is poured and hawks are admired, while in the background is a classic car. New York University Abu Dhabi has now acquired the collection and made it accessible to everyone.

“The photos are important because they tell what life was like before the sudden surge of oil,” said Dr Saul Kelly, son of JB and professor of history at King’s College London. “They describe the kind of houses that people lived in and they lived the same kind of life as their ancestors. That time is over now.

JB Kelly was born in New Zealand in 1925 and of Irish descent: his grandfather emigrated there at the end of the 19th century. When World War II broke out, he participated in the construction of aircraft hangars for the American forces.

Kelly then worked as a teacher, spending time in England and Cairo. His academic talent brought him back to England where, in the 1950s, he obtained a doctorate on Great Britain and the Gulf.

He made his first trip to what were then the Truce States in 1957. In Abu Dhabi, he met the ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Shakhbut, and his brother, Sheikh Zayed, who at the time was the representative of the sovereign in the eastern region. He has formed strong friendships with the two.

When Britain announced in 1968 that it would be leaving in 1971, Sheikh Zayed hired Kelly to help him establish the borders of the United Arab Emirates. Sheikh Zayed will become president of the United Arab Emirates on December 2, 1971.

“He had a lot of respect for Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh Shakhbut,” said Dr Kelly.

“They inherited oral traditions and here is a man who could add to that knowledge. He would have long discussions with them about the history of the family. I think it was appreciated by the leaders.

His articles also offer an honest take on how he personally viewed the British withdrawal.

According to his son, JB Kelly was a “man who spoke brutally … who didn’t have much time for the guys from the Foreign Office in the Gulf” during his time there and who he said didn’t appreciate it. the responsibility they had. He compared those who moved to Abu Dhabi in the 1950s and 1960s for a posting of only two or three years unfavorably with British personnel who served prior to 1947, when the Gulf was administered by the British India Service.

“[The Foreign Office] arrived late to administration in the Gulf and didn’t have much affinity for it as they were diplomats and used to haggling and bartering, ”said Dr Kelly. “It’s basically my father’s criticism of them. [He felt] most … were there to pay the tuition fees at home.

After his work with Sheikh Zayed, he continued to advise the Omani government, worked in Washington, and published several respected books. His first visits to Abu Dhabi laid the foundation for his founding book of 1964, Borders of Eastern Arabia. He died in 2009 at the age of 84.

After Dr Kelly edited and completed his father’s last book, Desert Conflict: The Diplomacy Of The Creation Of Borders In Southeast Arabia, he felt that the collection should rightly find a home in Abu Dhabi. In 2019, NYUAD acquired the collection, which includes nearly 50 archive boxes each containing dozens of documents.

“What really appealed about the collection was knowing that JB Kelly was a pioneering historian of Eastern Arabia,” said Brad Bauer, head of archives and special collections at the NYUAD library.

“I felt he had a lot of research potential,” Mr. Bauer said.

“[These collections] can be mosaic stones to see a richer picture. It was important that the collection be in Abu Dhabi and we are very happy to have it.

The archives have not yet been digitized but it could happen in the future, while a guide to the collection is online. Some of this information informed the recent exhibit at the Etihad Museum in Dubai on UAE-UK relations.

“It’s a unique collection and you won’t find anything like it anywhere else in the world, I don’t think so,” Dr Kelly said. “I am impressed with the work done by NYUAD. I am grateful to them for making it available to academics and interested members of the public in Abu Dhabi. “

A South Carolina course makes its PGA Tour debut this week as players make their final preparations for next week’s US Open at Torrey Pines.

The Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina, is hosting the 2021 Palmetto Championship, a tournament created to fill the RBC Canadian Open’s place in the circuit’s calendar. RBC has been canceled for the second year in a row due to travel restrictions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. Congaree will play as a par-71 at 7,655 yards.

Shedding recent difficulties, world No.1 Dustin Johnson made a bogey-less game, 6 under 65 on Thursday to take a share of the lead in the first round.

It opened in 2018 and has just two official members – its billionaire founders Dan Friedkin and the late Robert McNair, who owned the Houston Texans. What he has instead are guest ambassadors, prominent people in their industries who aren’t so much supposed to pay in cash rather than give of their time and mentorship.

Check out some photos from the 2021 tournament.

Hill House Home continues the momentum of its best-selling nap dresses with the launch of its first comprehensive clothing collection.

The five-year-old brand, which has seen explosive growth during the pandemic for its Nap Dress offerings, is launching its Mermaid Drop collection on June 16 which includes new Nap Dress styles and prints as well as new styles of clothing and accessories in outside of her traditional Nap Robe.

“We’ve seen our customers’ appetite for more across all categories, so we’re excited to take apparel one step further,” said Nell Diamond, Founder and CEO of Hill House Home. “We’ve barely scratched the surface in the dresses. There is so much that we want to show people and put that Hill House Home touch. “

The Mermaid Drop collection is the brand’s largest clothing collection to date and is meant to be a celebration of summer with vibrant colors and graphic prints inspired by flowers and mermaids. Diamond and the Hill House Home team began work on the collection in October in hopes this summer would see some return to normal.

“It’s funny how quickly things changed, but we really didn’t know when the vaccine would be available or if we were all going to work from home. [this summer]”said Diamant.” We all sat down together and decided to be optimistic and hope for a summer where we can really party and see our friends. It also represented a real opportunity for us to push our aesthetic. and our assortment.

The process of ideation of the new collection began with the prints, namely the “space floral” motif in emerald and powder blue and the white and pink “mermaid” print which represents images of mermaids, seashells. , stars and other patterns.

Both prints are available in existing Nap Dress styles, including Ellie, Caroline, Katherine, Athena and Sabrina dresses. The collection also offers existing nap dresses in a red cotton style, white paisley print, black polka dots and navy.

The Mermaid Drop is also expanding the brand’s Nap Dress category with new styles. There is the Akilah Nap dress, which is a collar and smocked body style similar to the Ellie dress, the Roxie dress, a tube dress with strings that Diamond described as “the tabloid vibe of the early 2000s.” , and the Lucy dress, which is a maxi version of the Roxie. The collection also features more Tiny Ellie options, which are the brand’s nap dresses in children’s sizes.

“As far as the aesthetics of the things we create and the shapes go, we really felt like we were leaving the meadow and the core of the cottages and going to the club,” Diamond said of how this collection is unique to others. of the brand. “We go to the club with our girlfriends, we dance on tables and we have fun and at the same time we will be comfortable.”

Apart from the Nap dresses, the brand offers their Paz set, which is a top and skirt set similar to the Ellie Nap dress, available in navy blue, white, mermaid and space floral prints. The collection also includes the Amal skirt, a long broderie anglaise skirt, the Lou Lou Duster, a loose lace coat and the Desk Sweater, a pink ruffled cardigan, among other styles.

“I was really hoping we would be able to get into apparel,” Diamond said of the expansion of the category. “When we first launched the Nap Dress, a big part of me hoped it would fall. I really hoped people would respond to it, but I also understood that it might not be. think this has really been the key to Hill House Home all the time that we don’t do things our guests don’t respond to.

Hill House Home was one of the few brands to have seen significant growth amid the pandemic, thanks in large part to its Nap Dress category. In 2020, the brand saw 275% year-over-year revenue growth, with the Nap Dress category surging 1,120%. Diamond said that growth continued into 2021, with a 350% year-over-year increase. The brand predicts that it will exceed 300% by the end of the year.

This growth has enabled the brand to expand its clothing offering and to enter other categories. The Mermaid Drop also offers accessories such as a mermaid print beach bag, two cat eye sunglasses, hair clips and Nap Dress themed products, among other items.

Throughout the past year, the popularity of the brand’s nap dresses has spread to its other categories, including bath, bedding and table linens. The Mermaid Drop will include these categories with the mermaid print available in bedding, bathrobes, beach towels, cocktail towels, and tablecloths.

“What we’re seeing in the data is that the Nap Dress is the top of the funnel moment,” Diamond said. “This is how people meet us and hear about us. Once they own the product and live with the product, they end up coming back to us when they have a need in one of the other categories. In a world without nap dresses, we would still be very excited about all of these other categories.

The Mermaid Drop will be available from June 16 at 12 p.m. EST on the Hill House Home website and is priced from $ 35 to $ 175.

In his Highland Avenue apartment in Birmingham, Joe Hulse wrote poems in his diary about men he fondly remembered. Gordie. Alf. Duke.

“If you weren’t far, those hills we know and love so well, those trees, that wailing wind, that brooding day, would all be mad with glorious ecstasy,” Hulse wrote.

The poem was dated November 1, 1910.

It was almost 60 years before The Stonewall Riots in New York brought LGBT rights into national consciousness and 105 years before the first same-sex marriages in Alabama.

Hulse’s Diary is maintained by the Invisible Histories Project, which for years has researched and collected pieces of LGBTQ history.

“This book radically opposes the idea that the history of the Southern Queer community is a modern invention and serves to remind us that places of queer history in Alabama exist in many formats throughout history. “, the project wrote on its website.

In honor of Pride Month, we’re teaming up with the Invisible Histories Project and scanning our archives to share a little glimpse into Alabama’s LGBTQ history.

The latest set photo from Indiana Jones 5 shows Harrison Ford back in action as an iconic character, wearing the famous archaeologist costume.

A new Indiana Jones 5 The set photo shows Harrison Ford back in the character’s classic costume. After encountering a number of setbacks and delays following its initial announcement in 2016, Indiana Jones 5 is finally back on track ahead of its slated 2022 release date. Recently, director James Mangold completed the supporting cast for the film, recruiting big names like Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen and Boyd Holbrook for the movie. together. Of course, Ford is back to play Indiana Jones, possibly for the last time.

Considering all the problems Indiana Jones 5 went through its path to production, it was exciting to watch the film progress and start principal photography. The first wave of Indiana Jones 5 set of photos gave viewers a glimpse of new locations that will be seen in the film. It wasn’t the most revealing footage, but now there’s a new look of Ford back in action.

Shared by Twitter user IJ Adventure Outpost is a new image of Ford on the Indiana Jones 5 together, donning the famous archaeologist costume. Ford can be seen with producer Kathleen Kennedy. Find out in the space below:

Especially since Indiana Jones 5 Plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, it is difficult to assess the context from this image. Based on the history of the franchise, it would be reasonable to assume that the scene Ford is preparing to shoot at least goes well in the first act, when Indiana embarks on its final adventure. As exciting as it is to see Ford in the leather jacket and fedora again, it will be very interesting to see how Indiana Jones 5 manages its titular character. At the time of filming, Ford is almost 70 years old, so there are obvious limits to what he can do physically. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull gave an older Dr. Jones a ride with mixed results, so I hope Mangold is able to create a compelling and entertaining story for the character.

With Indiana Jones 5 With the filming in progress, it is certainly possible that more pictures from the set will be posted online in the days and weeks to come. Lucasfilm generally does a great job of maintaining secrecy and limiting spoilers or leaks before release, but there is so much they can do. Perhaps the first looks at Waller-Bridge and the Mikkelsen characters will be released soon. With unofficial set footage circulating, it’s also possible that Lucasfilm is looking to forestall any leaks by sharing their own photos of the costumed cast, but that’s not how they’ve worked historically. For now, viewers may have to settle for these types of Indiana Jones 5 images.

It spoke a lot about the concept of government democracy when a journalist was accused of sedition for criticizing the government’s policy against Covid. The Supreme Court had to tell the government that journalists have the right to criticize, even harshly, government policies.

The judgment expressed it in words which must always be remembered by all, the elected authorities and the public and the journalists themselves. As the judge said: Gone are the days when mere criticism of governments was enough to constitute sedition. The right to make honest and reasonable criticisms is a source of strength for the community, rather than a weakness.

This is all the more true when we go through a phase of history fraught with unpredictability. Old values are no longer being respected and new values change depending on who uses them and when. Leaders are no longer guided by concepts of the public good; private and personal interests carry more weight. Sometimes things lead to funny situations.

In the very modern state of Kerala, a new rule has come into effect: wedding receptions must be limited to a guest list of 20. If only 20 people can attend, it makes no sense to print invitation cards. You can just write notes by hand and send them instead of printed invitations. But 20 or 200 you need wedding sarees and wedding shirts with the luster of silk etc. To buy wedding clothes, you need to show merchants wedding invitations. What riddle is it? Print invitations not to send to people, but to buy clothes with them!

Okay, you can’t fight with the government, so you decide to print invitation cards. Suddenly you realize that it is containment and that all printing plants are closed. This is what Churchill called a riddle shrouded in mystery within a riddle. No printing press, so no invitation card, so no purchase of basic necessities.

These are unheard of problems that create unheard of situations. Thus, the words take on unsuspected meanings. “Mask” was a word associated with the theater. The Covid epidemic has made masks a habit. In India, even TV presenters do their jobs with masks that go close to the eyes, making it difficult for viewers to understand what they are saying. Wearing a mask has become such a universal habit that some countries have made the headlines saying that they have become “maskless”. Israel canceled the mandatory outdoor mask wearing in April. This was after completing one of the fastest vaccine deployments in the world. New Zealand has made masks compulsory only on public transport, including flights. Bhutan, having vaccinated more than 90% of its adult population in just two weeks, went without a mask.

Masks became unnecessary when a new political concept was announced by the Modi government. In an incredible wave of thought, they created what is called The Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Ltd. The company quickly shortlisted Adani and eight other companies to submit proposals to develop the Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai, popularly known as VT (for Victoria Terminus).

The British used to build railway stations as magnificent architectural pieces. VT was perhaps the best example of this. Imagine Adani redoing this terminus complex. In the name of making Thiruvananthapuram Airport more efficient, Adani has increased charges on planes that land there. In the end, the passenger, in other words the citizen, will end up paying the price for “modernization”.

The VT station, spread over 2.8 hectares, is an architectural masterpiece. It has been an iconic landmark of Mumbai “With deep verandas for ventilation, a mixture of polychrome masonry and elaborate sculptural ornamentation, crowned by an imposing masonry dome intended to dominate the skyline”.

What proposal would Adani submit to the Railway Stations Development Corporation? To get an idea of the direction in which the wind can blow, we have to remember a recent report titled “Under the rule Modi, Ambani, Adani doubled their wealth”. Next, look at the Covid-19 vaccination certificate issued by the Indian government. Each certificate bears a photo of Narendra Modi with a message. The effort to give Narendra Modi credit for all the good stuff is pretty straightforward.

It is not difficult to imagine reforms in the railways after Adani’s takeover. Each compartment will carry a photograph of the Prime Minister with an edifying message. Each ticket will of course bear its photo. Every traveler will have the chance to know they are traveling thanks to the courtesy of the caring Prime Minister. Other innovations will follow because, after all, those who have doubled their wealth must triple it.

WATCH: Teaser pics from the ‘Money Heist’ finale

Netflix recently unveiled footage from the fifth and final season of “La Casa de Papel (Money Heist)”.

Among them is an encounter involving two key figures – Professor and Sierra, the latter pointing the gun at the former.

The professor or Sergio Marquina, played by Álvaro Morte, is the mastermind of the heist. While Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri) is the inspector who was in charge of the case after Lisbon / Raquel left the force.

In a press release sent to Bulletin Entertainment, Netflix said the footage revealed chaos both inside and outside the Bank of Spain; with the professor caught off guard after Sierra finds his hiding place.

“The war begins and we see how the Gang must bring out its harder side to survive, fueled by angst, more weapons and the desperation of not having a plan,” they teased.

Part 5 of the iconic series will be released in two volumes on September 3 and December 3.

“When we started writing Part 5 in the midst of the pandemic, we felt we needed to change what was expected of the ten episode season and used every tool possible to create the feel of a season finale. or a series finale in the first volume itself. We decided to work in an extremely aggressive genre, putting The Gang on the ropes. In Volume 2, we focus more on the emotional situation of the characters. It’s a journey through their sentimental map that connects us directly to their departure, ”said Álex Pina, creator of the show.

Late last year, Netflix announced that they were producing a Korean adaptation of the series.

Then in March, they presented the official cast.

HONG KONG (AP) – No one attended the annual candlelight vigil in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park when they remembered the deadly crackdown on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989 on Friday as Hong Kong police cordoned off some parts of the park, including football and basketball courts, to prevent all gatherings.

Police arrested an organizer of the vigil earlier today and warned people not to attend the banned event, with authorities silencing China’s remaining pro-democracy voices.

For decades, Hong Kong was one of only two cities in China allowed to mark the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Tiananmen Square.

In 1989, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators gathered in the square to demand democracy, less censorship and greater freedom of expression.

On June 4 of the same year, the Chinese army converged on the square with orders to clean it up, open fire and arrest the demonstrators. Estimates of the number of people killed range from hundreds to several thousand.

China’s official verdict is that the largely peaceful protests were aimed at overthrowing the ruling Communist Party and plunging the country into chaos. China has censored all mention of the event online.

Every June 4, thousands of people gathered in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park to mourn the victims of the crackdown, lighting candles and singing songs in remembrance.

This year, however, authorities in Hong Kong banned the vigil for the second year in a row, citing social distancing restrictions and public health risks linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

Similar events have also taken place every year in Macau, although authorities have also banned them in the past two years, citing the pandemic.

Critics say authorities are using the pandemic as an excuse to silence pro-democracy voices in Hong Kong as Beijing tightens control over the semi-autonomous city after months of anti-government protests in 2019.

Last year, thousands of people gathered in Victoria Park despite the ban and police warnings. A few weeks later, the police arrested more than 20 activists who participated in the vigil.

Organizers urged residents to mark June 4 in private this year by lighting a candle wherever they are.
