In the 1970s, Jawin was part of the “second wave” of women’s liberation and joined the National Women’s Organization, becoming chair of the Education and Employment Working Group. In this role, she often saw how inequalities in the workplace affected women who were trying to seek financial stability and career opportunities.

In 1979, the educator and activist wrote “A Guide to Career Preparation for Women: Scholarships, Grants, and Loans” to teach women the ins and outs of becoming financially independent and providing work opportunities. equal.

When Jawin launched CWNY, the organization began by highlighting the issue of domestic violence against women and spearheaded efforts to overcome legal barriers by providing protection to women living in crisis situations.

Prior to his death, Jawin celebrated the opening of the CWNY headquarters in a historic building at 207 Totten Ave. The founder of CWNY passed away in December 2019 at the age of 97.
