Here’s what’s happening for Remembrance Day in the Edmonton area



A number of Remembrance Day events will be taking place in the Edmonton area this year, in person and online.

Kingsway Legion Branch # 175

With the traditional Butterdome ceremony canceled for Remembrance Day, the Kingsway Legion is hosting a smaller version at its branch. The event will be held outdoors and has no capacity restrictions, but two-meter distance and masking is encouraged. The branch will be open before and after the event but proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test will be required to enter the building.

Town hall square ceremony

A short ceremony will take place outside at the cenotaph in Town Hall Square. Participants are urged to adhere to all applicable public health restrictions.

High level bridge

A ceremonial salute will be given by the Canadian Armed Forces on the High Level Bridge in Edmonton. The eastern approach and the sidewalk will be closed to motorists and pedestrians during the event.

Branch of the Legion of Saint-Albert # 271

The St. Albert branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will host a live event on November 11th. The link will be available online the same day at the link below. The city asks anyone wishing to visit the cenotaph to do so after the official ceremony is over.

Jasper Place Legion Branch # 255

The Jasper Place Legion will be hosting an outdoor ceremony at its branch. Anyone can attend the event but masking is preferred. There will also be service inside, but capacity is limited and guests are requested to reserve a seat in advance.

Spruce Grove will host an outdoor service in Central Park, just west of the Grant Fuhr Arena. The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend. Dress warmly and bring your own chairs. There will be no open house at the branch after the ceremony. There will be a small event for Legion members and veterans only.

Stony Plain Legion Branch # 256

The Stony Plain Legion will hold service for a limited number of veterans and branch members only. Guests can arrive any time after 10 a.m.

The Duke

There will be a virtual Remembrance Day service broadcast online at 10:30 am A link to the ceremony will be posted online the same day at the link below.

Royal Canadian Legion Lacombe Branch # 79

The Lacombe Legion will be holding an outside service at the LMC Cenotaph.

Edmonton transit service will be free on November 11 for veterans and serving members wearing a military uniform or Legion dress, with a Canadian Forces or RCMP ID card, or with a veteran’s card, or a national defense record card identifying the person as past or current military personnel. ETS will operate according to the hours for Saturday on that day and will recognize a minute of silence at 11 a.m.

If they cannot attend a ceremony, Albertans are encouraged to continue honor veterans and active members by taking a few moments to reflect at 11 a.m., making poppies to hang in the window or drop off poppies at a local cenotaph.
