You hear it all the time: you are what you eat. But that adage didn’t strike Deun Ivory until she suddenly faced “an acne beard” at the age of 25.

Ivory, a photographer, speaker, and creative director, lived in Texas at the time and ate some sort of dairy product with every meal. “I had ice cream everyday, butter on everything,” says Ivory, who is also the founder of Body: A Home for Love, a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to changing the culture around the way whose black women heal from sexual trauma. “It was over-eating, but I mean, in Texas, that’s the way we eat.”

Ivory was at a loss as painful cysts constantly appeared and disappeared around her chin for over six months. “I know it’s extreme considering everything that’s going on in the world, but I would say I’ve been through a mild form of depression,” she says. “I was crying all the time, and I couldn’t explain why. You go from fair skin one day to waking up with a lot of texture. Like, you have no idea.

To combat the cycle, she tried every DIY product and solution the internet suggested – one forum even told her not to wash her face for three months – and she “destroyed” her skin more in the process. . She remembers that he was constantly irritated and felt like he was “on fire.”

Then someone on an online forum suggested that he cut dairy products. She did and saw almost immediate results. Unfortunately, what she quickly discovered was that getting rid of her acne was only one piece of the puzzle, because as soon as the acne stopped, she ended up with intense hyperpigmentation. Erasing it has been a more recent success. Rosehip oil and some Tata Harper products helped early on, but the real winner came in the form of Topicals bleach serum for dark spots and discoloration. “This thing is magic,” Ivory says.

Below, Ivory breaks down the products that keep her skin free from acne and hyperpigmentation while giving it a glow. Read on for the cleanser that makes her feel ‘like a new person’, the sunscreen that looks more like a moisturizer, and the eye gel that erases the dark.

Versed Day Dissolving Cleansing Balm

“At one point I was only using makeup wipes and then I would fall asleep, but we’re not going to talk about that. Now I sometimes use this balm at night. I love the way it melts everything on your skin.

Youth to the People Superfood Antioxidant Cleanser

“The first time I put it on, I felt like everything had been washed away. I didn’t even know I had so much dirt on my face, but once I used it I felt like a new person. My skin was like, ‘Thank you.’ I don’t know what Youth the People put on, but it’s the best. I actually found it because the brand sponsored Body’s first real event: A Home for Love in Los Angeles. They donated products to our entire team.

Topical Discolored Serum for Dark Spots and Discoloration

“This serum smells like a perm – black people we know what perms look like – but I don’t care. It brings my skin together, so I’m going to use it – I actually use it every day.

“It’s from the hands and mind of a black woman, so I already knew she knew what I was dealing with and how to fix the problem because she solved it herself and she told me. looks like. This is, for me, one of the most important things to consider. And when I first started using the serum, I had a few marks on my cheek, and it completely removed them. I tried other hyperpigmentation serums and they worked, but they took a little longer. I noticed a difference with this one probably within two weeks.

Furtuna Skin Rinascita Delle Regenerating Balm Olive

“I go back and forth on moisturizers, but this one is golden. Furtuna Skin is one of my favorite brands – they’re probably neck and neck with Youth to the People. It smacks of maturity, if that makes sense, but it makes my skin look dewy without having to add anything else on top of it. I just ran out, so I used one from Youth to the People [below]. “

Youth To The People Adaptogen Deep Moisture Cream with Ashwagandha + Reishi

“It’s a deep moisturizer, and it really keeps my skin hydrated throughout the day. It smells earthy, but it’s not too potent – it’s tolerable. When I use it, I ‘always add my Tata Harper Nutritive Retinoic Face Oil with Vitamin A [below] in addition to give me a dewy effect.

Versed Vacation Eyes Brightening Eye Gel

“Sometimes my eyes are swollen – as an entrepreneur you are exhausted all the time. I wasn’t used to paying attention to my bags under my eyes before, but then I was like,” Deun, you need it because you are more on screen and you have to look your best. ”So I use it in the morning and in the evening to get rid of any darkness and look more alive.

Tata Harper Retinoic Nourishing Face Oil with Vitamin A

“I put this on, and I’m like, ‘You can’t tell me anything.’ Like, I glow, I look supple, and everyone’s like, “Oh my god, your skin!” Like yes, I know. It just seals in all the goodness of my cleanser, serum and my moisturizer. I believe oils should always go on last – there’s no other way to do that. And it does contain vitamin A, but I’ve never had an ugly retinol with it.

Black Girl Sunscreen SPF 30

“I love the way this sunscreen seeps into my skin. I’ve tried so many sunscreens, and I’m like, “I appreciate the intention here, but it makes me ash”, because it’s session on my skin. Other times, they leave my skin scaly and mushy. This one looks like a moisturizer. I put it on and I feel really good. I apply it just once in the morning and get through my day.

Tata Harper Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Floral Essence

“I was using it after my cleanser, then I was like, ‘I’m going to use it after my routine.’ So now I use it as a mist to refresh my skin. I don’t know if it’s right or wrong, but I love what it does to my skin. Especially if I’m dry I just put this on, and it’s like wham-bam. “
