Mail order photographer beats competition for first place in photo competition

MACOMB, IL – As the old saying goes, “Big things come in small packages.” A photographer from the Visual Production Center (VPC) at the University of Western Illinois, one of four employees at the WIU Photo and Print Shop at Tillman Hall, beat the Big 10 School Photographers and Big 12 in a recent monthly from the University Photographers Association of America (UPAA). photo contest.

Rachael Keating, Digital Imaging Specialist II, placed first in the Sports Action category of the September UPAA competition for her photo taken in the moment of Leatherneck Men’s Soccer. Sarah Ritter, Head of VPC, placed fourth, once again beating photographers around the world, for her shots of fireworks on the WIU campus (Campus Environment category) and a carnival ride during Heritage Days 2021 ( Personal Vision category).

The duo are no strangers to winning UPAA competitions. Ritter placed third and fourth in October 2020; Ritter and Keating each clinched fifth place in the annual UPAA photo contest in June 2020; and both placed in the April and January 2020 competitions of the UPAA.

The UPAA Monthly Picture Contest began in 2004 as a way for members to share photographs in a friendly competition. University of Houston photographer Jeff Shaw came up with the idea, and the contest has grown from a few images in its early days to over 300 monthly entries.
