Memorial Day Services in the Tampa Bay Area

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – This Memorial Day weekend, several events and services are being held in the Tampa Bay area to honor the fallen.

Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday in May. Men and women who died while serving in the United States military are honored.

News Channel 8 has compiled a list of services and memorials in the area for those wishing to honor fallen service members.

Location: 3810 W. Kennedy Boulevard, Tampa

Sunday, from 8 p.m.
Monday at 11 a.m.

The American Legion Cemetery Corporation and USS Tampa Post 5 celebrated Memorial Day at Tampa’s only veterans cemetery in 100 years.

A luminous celebration will take place on Sunday. Friends and family are welcome anytime after 8 p.m. There will be no official service or ceremony, but luminaries will be left for visitation throughout the night.

The official observance of the American Legion’s USS Tampa Post 5 will begin Monday at 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a flag and show their support by waving it along Kennedy Boulevard.

Wreath registration is available for those who wish to lay a wreath of remembrance during the Post Everlasting portion of the ceremony. Those wishing to lay a wreath should register at the service registration table from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on Monday. All branches of the military will be represented.

The ceremony will include guest speakers and a vocal tribute. Flags will be raised for all staff at noon.

Everyone is invited to attend the event to honor the nation’s fallen service members.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Bay Pines National Cemetery are inviting volunteers to place about 25,000 small flags on individual graves at the cemetery on Sunday.

The flags will be provided by Flags for deceased veterans. Visitors may place flags at grave sites at any time, but for this event volunteers must register with Flags for Fallen Vets to obtain flags.

Parking will be available in the Bay Pines VA Hospital parking lot behind the Bay Pines National Cemetery. The roundabout area near the main entrance will be the assembly point for flag placement.

Volunteer registration is available online.

When: Monday at 10 a.m.

The Bay Pines VA Health System will hold its first in-person Memorial Day ceremony since 2019 Monday at 10 a.m. at Bay Pines National Cemetery.

Guest speakers at the event include local leaders from the Bay Pines VA Health System, St. Petersburg VA Regional Office, and Bay Pines National Cemetery, as well as U.S. Representative Charlie Crist, Florida’s 13th Congressional District .

U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Randall West will deliver the keynote address at the ceremony.

Those wishing to attend the ceremony must participate in a COVID-19 risk screening before entering campus. To access the VA Screening Tool, text the word “screen” to 53079.

Parking for the event will be available nearby and shuttles will be available to take guests from the parking lots to the National Cemetery.

When: Sunday at 10 a.m.

Hillsborough County will host its 25th annual Memorial Day commemoration event on Sunday. Veterans and Consumer Services and the Hillsborough County Veterans Council invite the community to the ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Garden of Gold flag installation will be erected in honor of fallen service members in Florida. The moving collection features the faces of over 30 members who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Colonel Benjamin Jonsson, commander of the 6th Air Refueling Wing at MacDill Air Force Base, will be the keynote speaker.

Location: 100 N Ashley Dr, Tampa

When: Monday at 11 a.m.

The organization Commitment, Respect, Integrity, Service, Pride will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at MacDill Park in downtown Tampa on Monday at 11 a.m.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor and Vice Admiral James Malloy of U.S. Central Command will speak at the commemoration. The ceremony is open to the public.

When: Monday at 11 a.m.

The Florida Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery will hold a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday. The ceremony will include a wreath laying, speeches and comments, patriotic music, a gun salute and tap dancing.

This is the cemetery’s first ceremony since 2019 and the local community is encouraged to attend. Those in attendance are asked to adhere to CDC guidelines, including wearing a mask and distancing from other attendees.

Location: 9810 SR 72, Sarasota

When: Saturday at 10 a.m.

Sarasota National Cemetery will host its Memorial Day Tribute Saturday at 10 a.m. at Patriot Plaza.

The event will also be streamed live on Facebook.

Location: 101 Central Park Drive, Largo

When: Monday at 9 a.m.

The City of Largo will hold its Memorial Day Ceremony in Largo Central Park on Monday to honor fallen soldiers.

Largo Police Officer Robert Farias will be the keynote speaker. The ceremony will also include live music, presentations and a color presentation by the City of Largo Fire and Police Department Honor Guard.

Location: 1750 Curlew Road, Palm Harbor

When: Monday at 9:30 a.m.

The Palm Harbor Memorial Day ceremony will take place Monday at Curlew Hills Memorial Gardens.

Jess Lobal, United States Air Force, RET will be a guest speaker at the ceremony. Colonel Jurry Custin, USAF, retired, will be the master of ceremonies. The national anthem will be sung by retired USAF Sonya Bryson Kirksey. Music will be performed by the Palm Harbor United Methodist Church Choir.
