Each mini-house costs around $ 55,000, making it the cheapest source of homeless housing available in Los Angeles County, officials said. Each house in the village was hand painted by famous YouTube artist Zach Hsieh, alongside a team of other artists he recruited to beautify the village.

“Solving homelessness requires creative and sustainable solutions that address the immediate and critical need for housing today, while giving our homeless neighbors a path to a permanent place where they can feel at home tomorrow,” said Mayor Eric Garcett, who attended the village opening Thursday morning. “The only way to end this crisis is to have more quality, long-term housing options – and as the largest small house village in the country, the village of Arroyo Seco is the last stop. of our commitment to bring healing and hope to our most vulnerable. neighbors.”

The village, operated by Hope of The Valley Rescue Mission, was funded and built by the City of Los Angeles.

“This is part of City Councilor De Leon’s pledge to do his part in developing 25,000 new homeless housing by 2025,” the 14th district office wrote in a statement on Tuesday.

De Leon – who is running to replace mayor Eric Garcetti, who has reached the limit of his term – has slept in small houses, he said, to prove that housing can be built comfortably and economically for the community. without accommodation.

Residents are expected to move into the village on November 2.

The Arroyo Seco site at 5950 Arroyo Drive is the seventh village to open in the city and the sixth to be operated by Hope of The Valley.
