Palmetto Championship at Congaree Golf Club
A South Carolina course makes its PGA Tour debut this week as players make their final preparations for next week’s US Open at Torrey Pines.
The Congaree Golf Club in Ridgeland, South Carolina, is hosting the 2021 Palmetto Championship, a tournament created to fill the RBC Canadian Open’s place in the circuit’s calendar. RBC has been canceled for the second year in a row due to travel restrictions linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. Congaree will play as a par-71 at 7,655 yards.
Shedding recent difficulties, world No.1 Dustin Johnson made a bogey-less game, 6 under 65 on Thursday to take a share of the lead in the first round.
It opened in 2018 and has just two official members – its billionaire founders Dan Friedkin and the late Robert McNair, who owned the Houston Texans. What he has instead are guest ambassadors, prominent people in their industries who aren’t so much supposed to pay in cash rather than give of their time and mentorship.
