Photos: Biden and his family take a walk in Nantucket on Thanksgiving weekend
The group then took a short walk to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Our Lady of the Isle for a 5 p.m. mass, where Biden was greeted by the clergy.
Spending Thanksgiving in Nantucket is a tradition of the Biden family. It all started in 1975 when then-US Senator Joseph Biden, his future wife, Jill, and young sons, Beau and Hunter, vacationed there.
The family has returned almost every year since, including when Biden was vice president from 2009 to 2016 under President Barack Obama. The family did not visit the resort island last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Biden does not own a home on the Nantucket, but stays in various properties. This year, the Biden family are staying on a 13-acre estate owned by private billionaire David Rubenstein.
The Bidens have ventured outside the complex since arriving on Tuesday night. On Thanksgiving Day, the President and First Lady Jill Biden visited a United States Coast Guard base at Brant Point. He also organized a virtual meeting with members of the six military branches, stationed in the United States and around the world.
The family had lunch at the Nantucket Tap Room on Friday, before heading to Main Street for some shopping. The President and the First Lady attended the tree lighting at 5 p.m., accompanied by their daughter, Ashley Biden, Hunter and his wife, Melissa Cohen and their baby, Beau. Several grandchildren were also in tow.
The president plans to wrap up the festivities and return to Washington DC on Sunday, according to the White House.
